America’s Got Talent Season 21 Judges’ Callbacks Week 1 moved the competition away from the AGT theater and into the judges’ homes, where twelve returning acts performed one more time for a place in the Live Shows.

Mel B welcomed the contestants to England with fellow Spice Girl Emma Bunton helping evaluate the performances. Simon Cowell hosted his callback group in Malibu alongside producer Poo Bear and singer Normani.

Eight acts advanced by the end of the episode. Butter & Grit, James & Marina, Béty Dumitru, Travis Garland, Abiud Sando, Akira, Nyjah Music & Zyah Rhythm, and Elsie earned Live Show spots, while four other acts were eliminated.

Best Performances

Butter & Grit

Butter & Grit returned with an original song about the friendship at the center of their musical partnership. Instead of leaning on the playful food references that defined their audition, the duo slowed the moment down and sang directly to each other.

The performance struck a personal chord with Mel B and Emma Bunton, who immediately connected the song to their own years together in the Spice Girls. That emotional clarity helped Butter & Grit earn one of Mel B’s three Live Show selections.

James & Marina

James & Marina brought Mel B and Emma Bunton directly into another layered mind-reading routine. The demonstration began with the mentalist duo appearing to reveal private thoughts before transferring part of the experience to the two Spice Girls.

The final sequence left both women trying to understand how they had seemingly shared information without speaking. The routine had the polish and personal involvement needed for the intimate callback setting, earning James & Marina a place in the Live Shows.

Béty Dumitru

Béty Dumitru faced the callback with only one available decision separating her from the next round. Her vocal performance gave Mel B and Emma Bunton the emotional connection they needed, and the young singer broke into tears when she learned she had advanced.

The result became one of the episode’s most emotional moments as Mel embraced Béty and confirmed that her Season 21 journey would continue in the Live Shows.

Abiud Sando

Simon Cowell had questioned whether Abiud Sando’s unusual movement illusion could expand beyond the viral visual trick seen during his audition. Sando answered by adding supporting dancers, broader choreography, and drone-captured aerial footage.

The new staging allowed viewers to see the movement pattern from above and transformed the original concept into a fuller production. Simon’s biggest concern had been addressed, and Sando advanced to the Live Shows.

Elsie

Elsie’s audition had been buried beneath a heavy backing track that prevented the judges from hearing the full size of her voice. For the callback, she removed the production layers and performed with a simpler arrangement.

The stripped-back presentation gave Simon, Normani, and Poo Bear a much clearer sense of her vocal ability. By directly responding to the audition criticism, Elsie turned an uncertain first performance into a successful callback.

Travis Garland

Travis Garland entered the callback with years of professional experience but also criticism that some habits had made his audition feel less controlled than it should have. His second performance reminded the panel why his natural vocal ability had carried him through the first round.

Simon acknowledged that Garland still had areas to refine, but the voice itself remained strong enough to justify another opportunity in the Live Shows.

Akira

Akira returned with another installment of the No-Show Show, using concealment, physical timing, and an intentionally absurd presentation to build a novelty act around what the audience was not allowed to see.

The callback confirmed that the concept could continue beyond the original surprise. Simon rewarded the originality and sent Akira forward.

Nyjah Music & Zyah Rhythm

Nyjah Music & Zyah Rhythm entered the callback as one of the youngest acts in Simon’s group. Their harmonies and natural connection remained evident as they performed again in front of Simon, Normani, and Poo Bear.

The judges recognized that the duo still had room to grow, but their potential and musical chemistry earned them a Live Show position.

Mel B advanced Butter & Grit, James & Marina, and Béty Dumitru. Simon Cowell advanced Travis Garland, Abiud Sando, Akira, Nyjah Music & Zyah Rhythm, and Elsie to the Live Shows.

Biggest Surprises

Lachlan Patterson

Lachlan Patterson needed more than two judges sitting in a quiet room, so Mel B moved his callback to a local pub and gave him a surprise audience.

The material earned laughs, but Mel felt that Lachlan’s confidence had dropped below the level needed for the Live Shows. She encouraged him to keep working before eliminating him from the competition.

Joel M.

Joel M. built his callback around a classic nested-object illusion, eventually locating a ring inside a nut, inside an egg, inside a lemon.

The technical sequence worked, but Mel B and Emma Bunton compared it against the unusually high standard of magic already established during Season 21. The trick was not enough to earn Joel a Quarterfinal position.

Madelyn Tallent & Malachi Martin

Madelyn Tallent & Malachi Martin returned with another vocal performance that showed the natural talent Mel B had recognized during their audition.

The callback also exposed how much performance experience the young duo still needed. Mel decided they were not yet ready for the Live Shows.

Elektrodads

Elektrodads brought their long friendship and coordinated dance style to Simon’s Malibu callback. Their movement remained clean and likable, but Simon wanted a larger leap from the audition.

He told the group that another year of practice and development could make them stronger competitors, ending their Season 21 run before the Live Shows.

Lachlan Patterson, Joel M., Madelyn Tallent & Malachi Martin, and Elektrodads were eliminated after their callback performances.

Acts Most Likely to Advance

Butter & Grit and James & Marina left Week 1 looking particularly well positioned for the Live Shows. Butter & Grit continued to connect through original music and friendship, while James & Marina delivered polished mentalism that involved Mel B and Emma Bunton directly.

Among Simon’s selections, Abiud Sando showed the clearest growth by expanding his original movement concept with supporting dancers and drone footage. Elsie also improved substantially by removing the heavy production that had obscured her voice during the audition.

What This Means for Season 21

Week 1 of Judges’ Callbacks demonstrated that improvement mattered just as much as a memorable audition. Contestants who directly addressed earlier judge feedback and expanded their performances earned the majority of the available Live Show spots.

With eight additional Quarterfinalists now confirmed, attention turns to Sofía Vergara’s and Howie Mandel’s callback groups. Their decisions will complete the remaining Live Show field and determine the final contestants competing for the Season 21 title.

Variety Spotlight

Judges’ Callbacks Week 1 featured original music, solo vocalists, mentalism, stand-up comedy, contemporary dance, magic, novelty entertainment, and vocal harmony. The variety of acts reflected the broad talent pool assembled during the Season 21 auditions.

The episode also showed how presentation can change the outcome. Simpler staging helped singers like Elsie connect more effectively, while expanded production elevated Abiud Sando’s dance performance into a Live Show-caliber act.

Booking Takeaways

Judges’ Callbacks Week 1 featured original vocal duos, solo singers, mentalism, stand-up comedy, contemporary dance, illusion, novelty performance, and group dance.

The strongest audience reactions came from acts that clearly communicated their identity. Butter & Grit built their performance around authentic friendship, James & Marina involved Mel B and Emma Bunton directly, Abiud Sando expanded his visual presentation, and Elsie allowed her vocals to become the clear focus.
