Guy Kelton Jones I AGT Season 21: Poet Reaches Quarterfinals

Guy Kelton Jones I on America's Got Talent Season 21

Written by Tim Grable

September 12, 2026

Guy Kelton Jones I brought an unusual combination of spoken-word poetry, singing, music, faith, history, and social commentary to America’s Got Talent Season 21. His audition, built around his poem “The Riot Wasn’t Plan A,” earned four yes votes and established him as a performer who did not fit neatly into a conventional AGT category.

Jones carried that approach into Quarterfinals 3, where he expanded the performance with poetry, vocals, and music in a piece centered on love, struggle, faith, sacrifice, and the repeated declaration that “they can’t say we didn’t try.” The performance drew an emotional response from the judges and carried Jones into the Top 5 in America’s Vote, but he did not advance to the Semifinals.

Who Is Guy Kelton Jones I?

Guy Kelton Jones I is a poet, singer, and performer who competed on America’s Got Talent Season 21. He was born in New York and told the judges that he was raised across the South, including Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

Poetry is also part of Jones’ family history. After his audition, he explained that his mother is a poet and that his grandfather and great-grandmother were poets as well.

On AGT, Jones combined that spoken-word background with music and singing. Rather than separating poetry from the other elements of his performances, he used them together to create pieces that moved between spoken verse, melody, historical references, faith, and personal reflection.

Guy Kelton Jones I’s America’s Got Talent Audition

Guy Kelton Jones I introduced himself simply by telling the judges, “I’m a poet,” before beginning a piece titled “The Riot Wasn’t Plan A.” What followed quickly expanded beyond a traditional poetry reading.

The performance explored what people are willing to do when something they love is threatened. Jones moved through images of struggle, resistance, sacrifice, faith, family, and perseverance while music increasingly became part of the presentation.

His delivery shifted between spoken word and singing, giving the performance its own rhythm rather than keeping it inside a single format. Historical and biblical references added another layer to the piece, while the audience became increasingly vocal as the performance built.

The response from the judges was immediate. Mel B called the performance powerful and said Jones had delivered inspiration, vocals, and wisdom together. Sofía Vergara praised his voice and said the performance felt special because he appeared to mean what he was saying.

Howie Mandel told Jones that he was much more than a poet and said he had taken poetry and spoken word to another level. Simon Cowell emphasized the qualities he looks for in a strong audition: surprise, originality, and memorability. He told Jones that the performance would be remembered and rated it beyond a 10.

All four judges voted yes, advancing Guy Kelton Jones I in the competition.

Why Guy Kelton Jones I Stood Out

Guy Kelton Jones I stood out because his act resisted a simple label. Spoken-word poetry provided the foundation, but singing and music changed the pacing and emotional range of the performance. The result felt closer to a complete theatrical piece than a conventional poetry reading.

His audition also demonstrated why originality matters on AGT. The judges had seen singers, poets, and musicians before, but Jones combined those disciplines in a way that made the presentation recognizably his own.

The words were equally important. “The Riot Wasn’t Plan A” moved through ideas of love, resistance, faith, family, and sacrifice without separating those subjects from the musical performance. Jones’ delivery gave the material urgency while still leaving room for quieter moments.

That approach became even more ambitious when Jones returned for Quarterfinals 3. His live performance again moved between poetry and singing, but the piece widened its scope through references to judgment, history, faith, social struggle, family, and the hope that future generations might inherit something better.

The recurring line “they can’t say we didn’t try” became the performance’s central idea. Jones connected it to images of marching, protesting, voting, sacrifice, revolution, love, and family, while musical passages including “things are going to get easier” and “things will get brighter” gave the piece another emotional dimension.

The performance built toward a forceful conclusion as Jones returned to the idea that people had tried to save the world through action, sacrifice, faith, and love. The audience cheered as he finished, and the judges responded with unusually strong reactions.

Howie Mandel was on his feet and compared the emotional experience to being taken to church. He called Jones his favorite act of the night to that point and compared the performance with Season 15 winner Brandon Leake, Howie’s former Golden Buzzer, while saying Jones had taken the concept to another level by incorporating music.

Sofía Vergara praised the creativity of combining poetry with singing and called Jones unique. She also predicted that America would respond to him.

Guest judge Kenan Thompson called the performance unbelievable and praised Jones’ courage. Mel B said the performance deeply resonated with her and left her choked up and crying before telling Jones she thought he was amazing.

The Quarterfinal performance showed that Jones had not simply repeated the formula of his audition. He expanded the relationship between spoken word and music while keeping the language and message at the center of the act.

America’s Vote placed Guy Kelton Jones I in the Quarterfinals 3 Top 5. He did not secure one of the advancing positions, ending his Season 21 competition before the Semifinals.

What Happens Next for Guy Kelton Jones I?

Guy Kelton Jones I’s America’s Got Talent Season 21 competition ended in Quarterfinals 3 after he reached the Top 5 in America’s Vote but did not advance to the Semifinals.

His completed Season 21 run introduced a performance style that combined spoken-word poetry with singing and music. His audition, “The Riot Wasn’t Plan A,” earned four yes votes, while his Quarterfinal performance expanded that format into a larger piece about faith, history, struggle, sacrifice, love, and hope.

Across both performances, Jones established an AGT identity built less around a conventional competition category and more around the way he combined language, music, personal conviction, and theatrical delivery.
