Who Is Nene Royal?

Nene Royal is a guitarist and singer from Phuket, Thailand who won America’s Got Talent Season 21. She began playing guitar at seven years old and developed a performance style rooted in classic and modern rock music.

During her introduction, Nene revealed that she was just 15 years old and would celebrate her sixteenth birthday the following day. She also shared that her dream was to become a touring superstar and that appearing on America’s Got Talent represented the biggest stage she had ever performed on.

Although visibly nervous before the audition, Nene credited her father with supporting her musical journey and helping her pursue opportunities like AGT. That audition began a Season 21 run that ultimately ended with Nene winning the competition and the $1 million grand prize.

Nene Royal’s America’s Got Talent Audition

After introducing herself to the judges, Nene stepped onto the AGT stage carrying an electric guitar and immediately established a high-energy rock atmosphere. As the opening chords of The Cranberries’ “Zombie” filled the theater, she attacked the song with confidence far beyond her years.

Her performance combined aggressive guitar playing with a powerful vocal delivery that captured both the emotion and intensity of the classic song. Rather than simply covering the hit, Nene brought her own youthful energy while maintaining the song’s raw edge.

The audience responded immediately, cheering throughout the performance as she balanced intricate guitar work with strong vocals. By the final chorus, the Dolby Theatre had transformed into a full-scale rock concert, earning one of the night’s loudest ovations.

Howie Mandel called the audition spectacular and predicted that Nene had a very good chance of going far in the competition. Sofía Vergara described her as a genuine rock star, while Mel B praised both her vocal control and impressive guitar playing.

Simon Cowell complimented the authentic quality of the performance, explaining that even its rough edges made the audition feel real and memorable. All four judges voted yes, sending Nene to the next round.

Why Nene Royal Stood Out

Nene Royal delivered one of the most memorable rock performances of America’s Got Talent Season 21 by combining impressive musicianship with genuine stage presence. At just 15 years old, she showed the confidence of a seasoned performer while playing one of rock’s most recognizable songs.

Rather than relying solely on her guitar skills, Nene balanced strong vocals with energetic playing throughout the audition. Her interpretation of “Zombie” showcased both technical ability and emotional intensity, allowing her to connect with the audience from the opening notes through the final chord.

The judges also responded to her authenticity. Simon Cowell commented that the performance felt real because it wasn’t overly polished, explaining that the slightly rough edges actually made the audition stronger. Mel B praised her vocal control and guitar playing, calling the combination “a match made in heaven.”

Howie Mandel later selected Nene for his Judges’ Callbacks group. She returned with Muse’s “Hysteria,” keeping the guitar-forward rock identity that had defined her audition while proving that “Zombie” had not been a one-performance moment. Nene advanced from the callback into the Live Quarterfinals.

Nene returned to the live stage during Quarterfinals 2 with her electric guitar and performed “Black Hole Sun.” The performance moved from controlled verses into heavier guitar-driven sections, with the crowd growing louder as she pushed into the song’s biggest vocal moments.

Howie Mandel was already on his feet when the performance ended. Sofía Vergara told Nene she could win the competition, pointing to the combination of her singing, guitar playing, and rock-star look.

Mel B acknowledged that rock was not normally her preferred style of music, but praised the vocals, guitar, look, energy, and overall vibe of the performance. She then pressed the Live Golden Buzzer, sending Nene directly to the Season 21 Finals and allowing her to bypass the Semifinals.

In the Finals, Nene chose “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes for her final competitive performance. The song gave her room to lean into the darker, unconventional stage presence that had separated her from the other singers throughout the season.

By the end of the Finals performance, the judges were standing. Howie Mandel left the judges’ desk and went into the audience to embrace Nene’s father. Guest judge KSI, watching Nene perform for the first time, called the performance out of this world.

Mel B said she was glad she had used her Live Golden Buzzer on Nene and again pointed to the mysterious quality of her stage presence. Sofía Vergara said there was no one else like her, while Howie said Nene should win the show.

America’s Vote completed that journey. Nene Royal finished first, won America’s Got Talent Season 21, and received the $1 million grand prize. During the Finale results show, she also performed with Linkin Park before the final results were announced.

What Happens Next for Nene Royal?

Nene Royal’s America’s Got Talent Season 21 run ended with her winning the competition and receiving the $1 million grand prize.

Her completed Season 21 journey included “Zombie” during the Auditions, “Hysteria” in Howie Mandel’s Judges’ Callbacks, “Black Hole Sun” and Mel B’s Live Golden Buzzer during Quarterfinals 2, and “Seven Nation Army” in the Finals.

The title completed one of the season’s clearest performance arcs: a teenage guitarist arriving on the AGT stage one day before her sixteenth birthday, developing through multiple rock performances, bypassing the Semifinals through a Live Golden Buzzer, and ultimately finishing first in America’s Vote.

Her Finale appearance with Linkin Park provided one final Season 21 performance before the results were revealed and Nene was announced as the winner.
