Comedy Writing that is Funny
If you are at all well-versed with stand-up comedy, you probably know that many comedians, and maybe even a majority of comedians, mine comedy and their comedy writing from pain. The audience might be laughing, but often the comedian is talking about subjects like heartbreak, depression, and other weighty matters. While comedy writing from pain is a well-worn method at this point, an arguably more challenging root is mining comedy from positiveness, which is one of the things that Daren Streblow manages to accomplish with grace and aplomb.
In the contemporary stand-up world, an increasing number of comics rely on dark, profane material and dark, profane language to stake their comedic claim and gain the attention of the audience. While Daren’s comedy writing might be clean and affirmative in comparison, it is far from boring. In fact, much of Streblow’s charm comes from his offbeat, engaging storytelling that is invariably packed with hilarious tidbits that never fail to keep audiences of all kinds in stitches.
Like many stand-ups, Daren got his start on the open mic comedy club circuit with good comedy writing. However, by the time he started performing at comedy open mics in the mid-1990s Daren already had the advantage of years of radio experience under his belt. With his already honed skills as a storyteller and entertainer, it was not long until he was successful enough to turn comedy into his day job in 1998.
Throughout his career, Streblow has insisted on working clean, meaning that he only performs family-friendly material. As a hilarious comic who also happens to remain appropriate for all audiences, Daren is regularly in high demand and has opened for such luminaries as Weird Al Yankovic as well with major companies like Universal Studios and Disney Cruise Lines.
One of the reason that Daren continues to resonate with audiences is through his incorporation of relatable, down to earth stories and situations. This refreshing unpretentiousness is one of the reasons for the nickname “The King of Uncool”, and all of these qualities are apparent in this short sample of Daren’s comedy writing. In this video Daren recounts an engrossing tale of awkward teenage dating that has an uplifting ending that is nonetheless Both interesting and uproarious.
This video is a fantastic example of what Daren Streblow does: relay a story that strikes an all too rare balance of hilarity, cheerfulness, and intelligent with a delightfully offbeat sensibility. Daren Streblow remains active and funny in the comedy world.
