It is funny when you hear Michael Jr. talking on the Catch the Baby comedy video about the impending birth of his first child, it’s easy to remember your own experiences and laugh in solidarity.
The picture people have of a comedian’s rise to “stardom” is bleak; endless Open Mic Nites, crisscrossing the country in ratty old station wagons that double as motel rooms, and a decade of gathering material and honing their craft.
That’s the truth for many comedians, but when a person is wonderfully gifted — really born ready — they skip all that agony and just get on with being a rising star.
One of these funny supernovas is known as Michael Jr. One night in a movie theater in his home of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the projector broke the film. Michael Jr. got up on the stage with a dare from his friends. When the equipment was repaired, the audience wouldn’t let him leave. Enter a star.
Comedian Michael Jr. is entertaining
Michael Jr. is funny and quickly got comedy gigs at the big-name clubs like Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California. He was taken there by legendary comedian George Wallace. The manager slipped him onstage and, a week later, he was playing at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Comedy Festival. From that festival, he became the first person to appear on the Tonight Show via satellite.
Inspired by talents like Bill Cosby and Jerry Seinfeld, gifted comedian Michael Jr. brings forth a relaxed and intuitive style that’s as funny as his origin story. A projector malfunction in a packed theater in Grand Rapids, Michigan led to urging from his friends to jump onstage and entertain the antsy crowd. The theater manager attempted to remove Michael from the building but then relented when the appreciative crowd demanded that he stay.
Since then, Michael has found eager audiences in a wide variety of venues, including network and cable television, famous nightclubs and Chicago’s 60,000 member Willow Creek Church. One of his best-known bits imagines the difficulty of living in your brother’s shadow — especially when your name is James and your brother is Jesus Christ.
Michael Jr. is funny with a completely “clean” comedian with material that can be enjoyed by grandparents or their great-grandchildren. As he says, “If I’m in a club, my material has to be clean enough to work in a church. If I’m in a pulpit, it has to be funny enough to work in a club.”
At the top of his career, he doesn’t chase money and glory. He is paying his luck forward, not at the end of his career, but while he is still white-hot.
Michael Jr. is the father of five and a devout Christian, he started programs to pay expenses for clean comedians to appear in homeless shelters, prisons, and hospitals. He sees comedy as a ministry. Michael Jr.’s motto is “Laughter: The tangible evidence of hope.”
