The close-ups. The confetti. The burst of happiness. Whether we like to admit it or not, those emotional Golden Buzzer moments are one of the best things about NBC’s America’s Got Talent.
First introduced on AGT in season 9, the Golden Buzzer quickly became the show’s trademark.
Here’s a quick reminder of how it all works: during the auditions and the Judge Cuts, every judge can send one performer straight to the live shows by pressing the dedicated button. Because it’s limited to a single act, judges will usually pick a performer who managed to stand out from all the rest and who moved them at an emotional level.
There have been many memorable moments throughout the years, and in this article, we’re looking back at four iconic singers who received this special recognition from the judges.
Laura Bretan
- Judge Mel B pressed the Golden Buzzer for Laura during AGT Season 11 (auditions).
Laura Bretan was only thirteen years old when she appeared on America’s Got Talent and dazzled the judges and the viewers at home with her powerful voice and captivating stage presence.
Her rendition of “Nessun Dorma” from the opera Turandot showcased her incredible talent as an opera singer – and while the act received a standing ovation from all the judges, it was Mel B who made the call to send Laura straight to the Quarterfinals.

Christian Guardino
- Christian was Howie Mandel‘s Golden Buzzer pick for Season 12 (auditions).
For his audition, then 16-year-old Christian Guardino decided to sing a version of The Jackson 5’s “Who’s Lovin’ You.” And, as it turned out, it was an excellent choice. Not only did Christian receive the Golden Buzzer from Howie, but he also managed to do something that few other acts succeeded in, leaving Simon Cowell speechless.
The young singer was eliminated in the show’s Semifinals, but his audition remains one of the best performances ever featured on AGT.

Michael Ketterer
- Simon Cowell‘s favorite act from Season 13 (auditions).
The singer/songwriter from Knoxville, Tennessee, competed in season 13 of America’s Got Talent, finishing the competition in 5th place.
Michael’s audition on the show consisted of singing Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody.” With his emotional performance, the talented father of six made people from all over the world fall in love with his unique voice – while also claiming Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer.

Angelica Hale
- Chris Hardwick was the one who sent Angelica straight to the live shows in Season 12 (Judge Cuts).
In 2017, Angelica Hale competed in Season 12 of America’s Got Talent, finishing the competition in 2nd place. Despite being just nine years old at the time of her audition, Angelica stunned the judges with her rendition of Andra Day’s “Rise Up.”
Then, in the Judge Cuts round, Angelica covered “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys. Guest judge Chris Hardwick was so impressed by her performance that he decided to reward the young singer by advancing her to the Quarterfinals.
