The best voices on America’s Got Talent are those who convey something more than just vocal excellence.
Emotion, an unexpected element, an inspiring journey – these are elements that round up a performance and elevate it in a way that makes it genuinely relatable to a significant number of people.
In short, they provide some value or a unique experience that the American (and global) audience cherishes and will keep coming back to.
Here are five of the singing acts that impressed.
Mandy Harvey
Sometimes, the best voices on America’s Got Talent belong to people who overcame insurmountable obstacles to be able to keep on singing.
It is Mandy Harvey’s case as well.
A singer since the age of 4, Mandy lost her hearing at 18 due to a tissue disorder that affected her nerves. This was not an impediment to Mandy’s career because she found a way of overcoming this condition.
The result? Three released albums, an active singer-songwriter career, and many invitations to give inspirational talks.
If you find it incredible that she delivers perfectly-pitched vocals without actually hearing what she sings, it may be useful to learn she developed her technique for controlling her voice. It involves relying on her pitch, muscle memory, and floor vibrations.
Most impressively, however, is that you could not tell Mandy Harvey has a hearing impairment just by watching her performance:
Chase Goehring
Another singer/songwriter who is also a guitar player and who made an impression in the finale of AGT is Chase Goehring, the 21-year-old who’s been dubbed “the next Ed Sheeran.”
It only takes a few seconds to notice the uncanny similarities.
One of the main aspects that made people support him all through the finale is the fact that they got invested in hearing Chase’s original songs and supporting the rise of a potential star.
Evie Clair
Among all the singers in AGT season 12, the 13-year-old singer Evie Clair had to experience the most challenging time.
Her soothing voice, called “a light at the end of the tunnel” by judge Howie Mandel, exuded with purity and joy despite Evie’s father battling terminal cancer:
Angelica Hale
Born a fighter, Angelica Hale has a voice that’s just like her spirit: bold, fierce and poignant.
Despite being only 10 years of age, she impressed with her poised attitude and a surprising command of the stage.
People just could not ignore her crystal clear, effortless voice, thus allowing her to eventually land in the 2nd place.
Kechi Okwuchi
We stay in the inspirational zone because Kechi is a singer you cannot help but applaud.
Having undergone a plane crash, she did not give up until she fulfilled her dream of singing in front of large crowds. Her rendition of ‘What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger’ in the finale was an emblematic moment in her journey.
