Derek Hughes’s specialty is magic, comedy, and acting. He is confident that the experience and the emotions transmitted by a magic performance cannot be captured in a recording, even if it is in high-definition.
Derek has become quite popular after he was a finalist on season 10 of America’s Got Talent. He managed to win the fifth place.
You can see below a portion from his performance on the show.
Now, let’s take a closer look at his career and background, shall we?
Derek’s Take on Magic
When French magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin became well-known, magicians were pretty much always wearing a top hat or a wizard look-alike hat and a tuxedo. Don’t forget to add the three-legged table as a prop to this image.
Moreover, the thing is this was how people portrayed magicians until Robert-Houdin came along and then the famous David Blaine.
He remembers how David Blaine performed a show called Street Special, where he wore jeans and a T-shirt.
That way, people would not attribute “special powers” to him because he looked like an ordinary person and not a magician.
Derek Hughes became interested in the notion of magic since he was 10.
He started taking acting classes when he was young because he found that acting gave him the power to make people believe when he was telling a story.
At age 12, he went to see Doug Henning perform, who is a Canadian magician and illusionist.
Since he had at that time in magic for about two years, he raised his hand when Henning asked for an assistant. Derek felt that Henning would pick him.
On stage, he told Henning that he was a magician as well. Derek looked at the crowd, and in that very moment, he knew that being a magician is his true calling and passion.
He is the only magician who was invited to perform at HBO’s prestigious Comedy Arts Festival. Let’s not forget that he was also the “go-to” fill-in for the legendary Mac King at Harrah’s in Las Vegas.
Derek’s contagious sense of humor and mind-blowing magic shows have made him one of the most sought-after entertainers for various events.
The New York Times has called Derek’s performance “Engaging, artful and smart.”
Audiences can see his shows at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California. Five years in a row, he has been nominated for Parlour Magician of the Year.
Despite all of his appearances, Derek Hughes’s biggest love is performing live, being in front of an audience and seeing their faces.
He knows how to combine storytelling with his theatrical skills and the result is an entertaining show, and his tricks really feel like magic.
If you want to provide a truly magical experience to your guests at the next party or event, we highly recommend Derek Hughes as an entertainer.
