Donor fatigue is something no charity wants to deal with. However, it is a phenomenon that affects a high percentage of fundraisers. Asking your supporters for too much too often can make them feel like walking ATMs. So, they stop giving altogether. We are sure you do not want that.
So how can you prevent donor fatigue? Here are four strategies you can use to keep your donors interested in showing support:
1. Offer alternative ways to donate
Not everybody has the financial freedom to give money constantly even if they would like to help your cause. Instead of always asking for cash, think of other ways your donors could still get involved. Maybe there’s a service they can help you out with or a product they have access to, and you do not.
2. Use social media to prevent donor fatigue
Some nonprofit organizations are reluctant when it comes to asking for donations via social media. However, when used correctly, social media can turn out to be an excellent solution that can help you reach out to donors and keep them engaged.
It is not enough to post a link to your website’s donation page on Facebook or Twitter to generate donations. The strategy on social media needs to showcase your mission while creating a sense of urgency. Video works great on Facebook, so consider creating a special clip for your donors to raise awareness and donations.
Still, like all things, this strategy must be used in moderation.
3. Make sure your supporters feel appreciated
This is a must when it comes to creating sustainable funding for charities of any size.
Sure, all nonprofit organizations value their donors, but that does not necessarily mean they feel that way. It is important to express sincere gratitude when interacting with those who support your cause. Saying “Thank you” helps, but you can do better than that.
A proper handshake when the time is right or looking straight into their eyes when expressing gratitude is small tweaks that can make a world of difference. You can also prevent donor fatigue and show your appreciation if you are willing to:
- Send personalized handwritten letters.
- Ask them for suggestions and ideas on a regular basis.
- Keep detailed records of your donors so that you know what their interests are. This will improve your interactions with them.
- Host special events where you recognize their contributions.
Let’s talk more about that last one, shall we?
4. Host fun events that are donor-centered
Since we are talking about ways to prevent donor fatigue, we could not leave this one out.
Hosting an event just for fun is an awesome opportunity to get to know your supporters on a more personal level and give them a chance to get to know you as well. You should not ask for money during those events. Just have fun and allow your donors to loosen up for a few hours. You’ll be surprised by what you can achieve with these informal events.
No event is complete without special entertainment. So if you are considering hosting an event that focuses on your donors, we can definitely help you out so that the entertainment is top-notch!
