Darrell Moten made the judges believe they had watched his first live performance fall apart during his America’s Got Talent Season 21 audition. The Philadelphia magician appeared to miss Simon Cowell’s selected card, became visibly upset, apologized, and walked backstage.
The failure was part of a much larger illusion. Darrell returned through a prerecorded conversation, predicted Simon’s choices, reappeared behind the judges, and finally produced the correct card from his pocket. The ambitious routine earned three yes votes and later secured him a place in Sofía Vergara’s Judges’ Callbacks. Darrell was eliminated during Judges’ Callbacks Week 2 and did not advance to the Season 21 Live Shows.

Who Is Darrell Moten?
Darrell Moten is a magician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Before appearing on America’s Got Talent, he had performed his magic online but had never presented an act in front of a live audience.
That lack of stage experience became part of the audition’s misdirection. Darrell appeared nervous when he met the judges, making the apparent collapse of his routine feel believable once the selected-card prediction seemed to go wrong.
His performance blended close-up card magic, mentalism, prerecorded video, theatrical storytelling, and a surprise reappearance behind the judging panel.
Darrell Moten’s America’s Got Talent Audition
Darrell walked toward the judges with an apparently unlabeled deck of playing cards. He rubbed the box to make the printed label appear, placed the cap back on, snapped his fingers, and produced a normal deck from inside.
He handed the cards to Simon and asked him to select one without showing it to the other judges, the audience, or Darrell. Simon placed the card beside him on the desk while Darrell prepared a prediction.
Darrell asked Simon to imagine his card inside a small box. He then displayed what appeared to be the selected card, and Simon initially confirmed that it matched.
The moment changed when Simon put on his glasses. He realized that the prediction was not his card, leaving the judges confused and Darrell visibly shaken.
Darrell apologized repeatedly and asked whether he could return another time. He walked backstage while the judges tried to determine whether the failed performance was real. Sofía Vergara appeared concerned, and Simon worried that he had damaged the young magician’s first live appearance.
A video of Darrell then appeared on the screen. Speaking from backstage, he told Simon that he understood where the trick had gone wrong and needed more information from him.
The prerecorded Darrell asked Simon to name any color and any number between one and 100. Simon chose turquoise and 77. The video responded correctly to both answers before revealing that the entire conversation had been recorded in advance.
Darrell then questioned whether even that explanation was real. He said the purpose of the sequence had been to get inside Simon’s head and told him to look behind the judges.
The real Darrell was standing directly behind the panel. The reappearance shifted the routine from an apparent failed card trick into a large theatrical illusion that had manipulated the judges’ expectations from the beginning.
Darrell reached into his pocket and produced one final card. This time, Simon confirmed that it was the card he had originally selected.
After the judges finished voting, Darrell added one last effect backstage. He told Terry Crews to check his pocket, where Terry discovered another unexpected object from the routine.
Why Darrell Moten Stood Out
Darrell stood out because the central illusion depended on convincing the judges that the performance had genuinely failed. His nervous introduction and lack of prior stage experience made the apparent mistake believable enough that the panel became emotionally invested in his disappointment.
The routine then expanded beyond the judges’ desk. Darrell used a backstage video, a prerecorded conversation, free choices from Simon, and a physical reappearance behind the panel to transform the original card trick into a larger piece of theater.
The prerecorded prediction was especially effective because it appeared to respond directly to Simon. Darrell correctly anticipated the color turquoise, the number 77, and Simon’s reactions, making it seem as though the magician had controlled the conversation before it happened.
Howie Mandel connected the performance to the judges’ earlier criticism of another magician who had been challenged to make close-up magic bigger. He told Darrell that this was exactly the kind of expanded presentation the judges had wanted to see.
Sofía praised the act for being different and admitted that Darrell had reversed the emotional dynamic. The judges initially felt sorry for him, only to discover that they were the ones being fooled.
Simon said he appreciated seeing something he had never seen before. He also noted that Darrell would benefit from more stage experience, but considered that a reason to support him rather than eliminate him.
Mel B remained confused by the structure and voted no. Howie, Sofía, and Simon voted yes, giving Darrell the three votes required to advance.
What Happens Next for Darrell Moten?
Darrell Moten’s America’s Got Talent Season 21 run ended during Judges’ Callbacks Week 2. After advancing from the auditions with three yes votes, Sofía Vergara selected him for her Judges’ Callbacks group and gave him another opportunity to compete for a place in the Live Shows.
Darrell was not selected to advance from Sofía’s callback group and was eliminated during the Judges’ Callbacks. Kameron Marshall, Brook Lynn, and Olivia Befus advanced from Sofía Vergara’s group to the Season 21 Live Shows.
Although Darrell did not reach the Live Shows, his audition remains one of the season’s more unusual magic performances because of its layered misdirection, prerecorded prediction, and surprise reappearance behind the judges.
