AGT Season 21 Semifinals Recap: Who Made the Finals?

America's Got Talent Season 21 Semifinals results recap

America’s Got Talent Season 21 reached the Semifinals with twelve acts fighting for just six open places in the Finals. There was no Golden Buzzer waiting to rescue anyone this time. Every act performed, America voted, and half of the field saw its season end when the results were revealed September 16.

The six acts moving forward could hardly be more different. Olivia Befus advanced with her dogs, Veronika Goroshkova with an aerial performance, Acro Canine Crew with dogs and acrobatics, Come Here with precision dance, Royal Lasers with a technology-driven visual production, and Geno Ploeger with close-up-style magic expanded for the AGT stage.

Kameron Marshall, Daniel Alvarez, Cesar Dias, Luke Taleno, Young & Strange, and Travis Garland were eliminated, setting the ten-act Season 21 Finals field when the six America’s Vote finalists joined the four acts already sent directly to the Finals by Live Golden Buzzers.

Best Performances

Come Here

Come Here opened the Semifinals by turning the stage into a constantly shifting wall of movement. The large dance group moved through locking, popping, contemporary movement, and classical elements while maintaining the synchronization that had carried them through Quarterfinals 2.

The formations kept changing without breaking the visual line. Mel B stood as soon as the performance ended and pointed out how many dance styles had been folded into the routine. What impressed her most was that such a large group could stay in sync while moving through cannon effects and rapid transitions.

Sofía Vergara called the group mesmerizing, professional, and unique. Howie Mandel went even further, calling Come Here his favorite human dance troupe of the season and comparing their precision to machines. America’s Vote rewarded that precision with a place in the Finals.

Geno Ploeger

Geno Ploeger built his Semifinal magic around something immediately recognizable from his life away from AGT: going back to school. A deck of cards became the starting point, but notebooks for marketing, accounting, world history, and economics quickly became part of a routine about trying to balance classes with a national television competition.

Howie selected the Jack of Diamonds. Sofía opened the accounting notebook to Chapter 15. Mel B blindly circled the word “Future.” Each decision seemed disconnected until Geno began pulling the pieces together. The selected card appeared on a hat, the torn notebook page vanished and reappeared with one of Geno’s friends in the audience, and the word Mel had chosen became the setup for his final reveal.

Geno’s friends stood and displayed a message about what his future could look like. Sofía called the routine flawless and funny. Howie praised how slickly Geno handled the choices and called it his favorite act of the night at that point. America’s Vote then gave Geno exactly the future he was asking for: a spot in the Season 21 Finals.

Royal Lasers

Royal Lasers again blurred the line between choreography and technology. The dancers had to hit exact positions as animated environments, laser effects, and projected visuals changed around them, making timing as important as the physical dance itself.

Mel B praised the choreography and the precision required to stay aligned with the technology. Howie emphasized that viewers were seeing more than dancing: the effect depended on choreography, technology, artistry, drawing, design, and execution working together.

Sofía said the act had improved every time it returned and called this performance her favorite. The scale mattered on television, but the judges repeatedly came back to how much coordination had to happen underneath the spectacle. Royal Lasers advanced to the Finals through America’s Vote.

Kameron Marshall

Kameron Marshall approached the Semifinals with an idea built around inception: could he make people believe their decisions were random after quietly planting the outcome in advance?

Audience members began by drawing images on cards. The judges then worked together to narrow an imaginary deck until they arrived at the Queen of Hearts. Sofía reached into a bag filled with audience cards and somehow pulled out that exact card.

Kameron then revealed a fresh Queen of Hearts tattoo. That looked like the finish until he showed there was more ink hidden above it: the same palm tree, moon, and stars that appeared on the back of the card Sofía had pulled. Finally, audience members lifted their own cards to reveal the same Queen of Hearts and matching image throughout the theater.

Sofía said Kameron kept getting better every time he performed. Howie said he deserved to be in the Finals, and Mel B praised how slickly the routine had been constructed. Despite one of his strongest performances of the season, Kameron did not receive enough votes to advance.

Veronika Goroshkova

Veronika Goroshkova made her aerial pole routine faster, higher, and more dangerous for the Semifinals. She repeatedly spun around the pole with little visible support, changing positions while maintaining the controlled lines that made the difficulty look easier than it was.

Sofía said Veronika continued making the act more challenging every time she appeared and joked that she made it look easy enough to try at home. Mel B focused on the elegance and apparent effortlessness of the movement before asking how Veronika handled the dizziness created by so much spinning.

Howie reduced his reaction to one word: “wow.” He pointed to the speed, height, and danger of the routine and how often Veronika seemed to be holding herself only with the grip behind her knee. America’s Vote moved her into the Finals.

Daniel Alvarez

Daniel Alvarez continued doing what had made his Quarterfinal set work: using the competition happening around him as material. He opened by joking about competing against three magicians who still could not make legs appear for him, then moved to the difficulty of competing with dog acts because everyone watching had the same thought: could they pet the dog?

From there, Daniel moved into jokes about growing up with six sisters, the questions children ask about his injury, and his own habit of inventing increasingly ridiculous explanations. Near the end, he physically shifted himself out of his normal seated posture after referencing people who said he had looked uncomfortable during earlier rounds.

Howie said Daniel’s comedy no longer felt like an act so much as spending a few minutes with a funny friend. Mel B thought the set started slightly wobbly before Daniel found his confidence, while Sofía praised how quickly he could turn things happening around him into new material. Daniel’s run ended in the Semifinals.

Biggest Surprises

Olivia Befus Wins the Dog-Act Comparison

Olivia Befus entered the night with an unusually direct comparison hanging over her performance. Acro Canine Crew was competing in the same Semifinal, giving America two very different dog acts to evaluate at once.

Olivia stayed focused on the relationship between trainer and dogs rather than trying to match the scale of the larger group. Sofía praised how clearly the dogs appeared to enjoy working with her. Mel B emphasized the difficulty of Olivia managing the entire act by herself with three dogs.

Howie openly acknowledged the problem of being on the same night as Acro Canine Crew. America ultimately did not choose between them at all. Both dog acts advanced to the Finals.

Acro Canine Crew and Olivia Befus Both Advance

Acro Canine Crew filled the stage with dogs, tumbling, choreography, and constant movement. The routine kept creating small visual surprises, including dogs weaving through each other’s legs while the human performers maintained the larger acrobatic production around them.

Sofía said there was not a dull moment. Howie called the group his favorite act of the night at that point and told viewers they deserved to advance. The result created one of the more unusual outcomes of the Semifinals: both canine acts survived a six-act cut.

Travis Garland Falls Short After Another Strong Vocal

Travis Garland took on a Billie Eilish song and deliberately left himself room to build. The opening drew some concern from Mel B, but the performance changed as Travis reached the key change and opened up the range and vocal runs that had become his signature during Season 21.

Mel B questioned the song choice even while praising what Travis eventually did with it. Sofía said his voice gave her chills every time she heard it, while Howie again called him an exceptional singer.

The praise did not translate into one of the six available Finals spots. After surviving Quarterfinals 4 through America’s Vote, Travis was eliminated in the Semifinals.

Young & Strange Divide the Judges

Young & Strange turned their Semifinal into a comedy-heavy illusion about franchising their act. Two young audience volunteers became the supposed next generation of Young & Strange, only for an expensive illusion box to turn out to be an empty road case.

The routine then transformed the apparent failure into the trick. One child vanished from the box and eventually reappeared elsewhere in the theater, while the duo kept layering jokes about show business, minimum wage, bad investments, and their own incompetence around the magic.

Sofía still enjoyed the routine but thought it leaned more toward comedy than magic. Mel B was much harsher, saying the previous performance had been considerably stronger. Howie disagreed and argued that the children made the illusion more relatable and entertaining. America sided with the result rather than the debate: Young & Strange did not advance.

Acts Advancing to the Finals

Olivia Befus, Veronika Goroshkova, Acro Canine Crew, Come Here, Royal Lasers, and Geno Ploeger received the six available Finals positions through America’s Vote.

They join the four Quarterfinal Live Golden Buzzer finalists — Hundred Fingers, Nene Royal, Lai Noelle, and Unitree — to complete the ten-act Season 21 Finals field.

What This Means for Season 21

The Semifinal vote produced a Finals field weighted heavily toward visually distinctive variety acts. Two dog acts advanced, along with an aerialist, a large dance group, a laser-and-dance production, and a magician. None of the Semifinal singers or comedians survived America’s Vote.

That result also means the four Live Golden Buzzer finalists will meet a group that had to survive one additional public vote. Olivia Befus, Veronika Goroshkova, Acro Canine Crew, Come Here, Royal Lasers, and Geno Ploeger each advanced from a Quarterfinal and then survived the Semifinals before reaching the final stage.

The Season 21 Finals begin September 22, with the winner revealed September 23. Ten acts remain, and America’s Vote will determine the Season 21 winner.

Variety Spotlight

The Semifinals moved through large-group dance, solo vocals, dog training, acrobatics, magic, laser technology, physical comedy, aerial performance, stand-up comedy, grand illusion, and original rap in a single night.

The acts that advanced showed several different ways visual entertainment can fill a television stage. Come Here relied on synchronization across a large group, Royal Lasers required performers to move precisely against programmed technology, Acro Canine Crew mixed human acrobatics with trained dogs, and Veronika Goroshkova created danger and scale with one performer high above the stage. Geno Ploeger reached the Finals from the opposite direction, starting with small objects and personal choices before expanding the reveal into the audience.

Booking Takeaways

The Season 21 Semifinals featured dance groups, singers, dog acts, aerial entertainment, magicians, comedy, laser production, acrobatics, and original music.

The audience response showed how differently those categories can command a live room: Come Here’s synchronization created immediate visual impact, Geno Ploeger built attention through audience participation and layered reveals, Veronika Goroshkova created tension through height and danger, and both dog acts generated strong reactions through movement, personality, and the visible connection between trainers and animals.
